REMOTE IMMERSION 2017

PATAGONIA, CHILE

SAILING TO THE END OF THE WORLD

The pristine waterways of Chilean Patagonia — framed by snow-capped mountains and ancient glaciers — provided the perfect setting for REMOTE’s second annual boutique travel show. It was also the first REMOTE to open its doors to travel designers from around the world, showcasing Latin America’s small-scale hotels and expedition cruises to an international audience.

In order to introduce REMOTE to buyers from North America and Europe, we relied on the invaluable support of two trusted friends and informal advisors: Clark Kotula in the United States and Simon Heyes in Europe. Their credibility and networking skills were instrumental in spreading the word about this new boutique travel show that would bring participants together for a fully offline journey aboard an upscale expedition vessel — conducting business while sailing to what many call “the end of the world.”

With its rich maritime heritage as a gateway to Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica, the charming city of Punta Arenas marked the beginning of the journey.

Following a welcome gathering on land — with guests sampling traditional Patagonian barbecue and vibing to southern Chilean rhythms — the Stella Australis cruise ship set sail through the Strait of Magellan for four days. Along the route, the ship stopped at remote islands, allowing participants to explore the sea by Zodiac and enjoy guided hikes across dramatic landscapes.

The itinerary was thoughtfully adapted to establish a productive routine: mornings dedicated to business meetings and outdoor exploration in the afternoons — or vice versa. Evenings were reserved for content and social gatherings.

This structured balance between business and experiences proved so effective that it became the blueprint for all subsequent REMOTE editions on land.
