If you’ve been a REMOTER for a while, you already know that, in our Immersions, the pursuit of sustainability and regenerative practices has become a priority. Caring for the places we visit has always been at the heart of REMOTE Latin America. But in recent years, we’ve placed impact at the center of everything we do — recognizing that taking responsibility for it is both urgent and essential to the kind of tourism we want to foster across Latin America.
Each destination we arrive in brings a completely different reality, with its own challenges, surprises, and powerful learnings. That’s why we embrace, more than ever, the idea of “thinking globally and acting locally.” A one-size-fits-all sustainability strategy simply doesn’t work for us, as our REMOTE destinations are anything but uniform — and they are what guide our path forward.
Our Sustainability and Impact Strategy, inspired by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Criteria and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), continues to serve as our compass. But increasingly, it is shaped by the journeys we build together with each destination.
In Boquete, this journey has led us into a diverse and vibrant community that is increasingly reconnecting with and valuing its territory — through local, land-based production, the care for its extraordinary natural surroundings, and a growing commitment to ecotourism.
As part of this process, we engaged 16 local accommodation and activity suppliers in our sustainability consulting initiative, fostering exchange, listening, and offering guidance and inspiration for more responsible practices. Now in its fifth edition, this collaborative consultancy has become one of the ways we build deeper connections with local communities and aim to create a positive impact that goes beyond the event itself.
Through a collective effort, our team worked closely with local partners to bring a series of sustainability initiatives to life:
- Engaging 16 local hotels and activity providers through our sustainability consultancy to align responsible practices through dialogue, training, and shared learning.
- Minimizing waste and reducing plastic use by working closely with partner venues and hotels.
- Promoting water and energy conservation through simple, mindful practices.
- Celebrating Panama’s cultural heritage through storytelling, traditional cuisine, local products, and live performances.
- Designing low-impact experiences together with local providers, honoring the destination’s natural beauty and cultural identity.
- Connecting global and local stakeholders by creating space for tourism professionals and Panamanian entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and build relationships.
- Delivering a low-carbon event, by reducing and offsetting approximately 104 tons of CO₂ and supporting community-led reforestation in areas of high biological priority.
- Bringing the 7th edition of REMOTE Legacy to life, with a series of free, inspiring talks in Spanish open to the local community.
Offsetting Through Community-Led Regeneration
We are offsetting an estimated 104 tons of CO₂ emissions from our event through APTSO – Fundação Panameña de Turismo Sostenible, via its Forests and Biodiversity program. Implemented in collaboration with local communities and members of the Red SOSTUR network, the initiative supports community-led reforestation in areas of high biological priority.
By sourcing seedlings directly from local communities, the program helps strengthen local economies while restoring soils and regenerating landscapes that serve as important carbon and biodiversity reservoirs. It also generates meaningful social and environmental co-benefits, contributing to food sovereignty, local well-being, and territorial resilience.
REMOTE Legacy: Creating Unique Experiences and Reaching the Global Market
As part of our ongoing commitment to positively impact the host destinations that open their doors to our REMOTE Immersion, on May 6th at Hotel Panamonte, we’re hosting the seventh edition of the REMOTE Legacy – our full morning of free practical lectures in Spanish open for local entrepreneurs and independent tourism professionals.
The theme for the REMOTE Legacy Boquete is “Tourism in Chiriquí: Creating Unique Experiences and Reaching the Global Market.” Based on previous conversations between the REMOTE team and local stakeholders to better understand their main content needs, the lecture series has been curated to deliver inspiring and useful insights for developing authentic, distinctive experiences for international travelers.
Recognizing our responsibility to plant meaningful seeds and leave Boquete and Chiriquí better than we found them, REMOTE will express its gratitude through an exclusive morning of empowerment and inspiration for the local travel professionals who have welcomed us with such warm hospitality.
