Why It’s Important to Disconnect

Digital technologies have had a great impact on people’s everyday lives and transformed work, leisure and travel contexts. It is becoming increasingly obvious that our world is developing an unhealthy attachment to it. And depending on the intensity of use it can bring some types of problems:

Stress Levels: Our tech devices cause us stress. If it isn’t lost data or a device crashing, then it’s the constant barrage of emails and social media notifications that can quite literally drive us crazy. Real-time access to any information has driven us to obsessive behaviors, constant checking-in, that causes a good deal of angst in our often already stressful lives.

Interpersonal Skills and Relationships: When you stop taking time to actually talk to people, sending them quick texts of messages instead, you lose some of your finesse. You no longer practice your interpersonal skills as before, and your interactions with other people end up being affected and weakened as well, when you only pay attention to your cell phone during dinner or watching TV and not to the person you are with.

Distraction, not being Present: Tech devices keep us constantly stimulated, which is entertaining and fun, but also distracting. When we are regularly distracted, the mind becomes accustomed to shorter spurts of concentration and frequent interruption. That means we can’t focus for long periods of time.

For this and other reasons that pause throughout the day, and disconnect longer periods are important for our physical and mental health.

Traveling is a great excuse to disconnect. While on vacation, there are lower expectations for being in touch. It’s a good time to take a break from your devices. Try turning it off for a few days, or turn off your cell data and only use it to take photos or notes.

These fabulous destinations offer the chance for a digital detox by unplugging and giving the brain a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy each and every moment for what it is.
